COME Show Your Support For A Clean Green Pasadena
By Joining Us For a RALLY

Monday, October 24
3:30PM – 4:30PM

100 N Garfield Ave, Pasadena, CA 91101

The City Council will be meeting in person and we will participate in the Council Meeting at 4:30pm to present more than 1000 postcards signed by Pasadena residents.

Today, whenever a Pasadena home or business flicks a light switch, at least half of the electricity that is used is made by burning coal and gas, both fossil fuels that cause climate change.  On Monday, October 24 at 3:30 pm PASADENA 100, a coalition of 21 local non-profit, non-partisan organizations, will hold a rally on the steps of Pasadena City Hall calling for Pasadena Water and Power (PWP) to make a change.  As PWP is beginning a strategic planning process for the next 20 years, the Integrated Resource Plan (IRP), these Pasadenans want the city to plan for a rapid transition to clean energy sources like wind, solar, hydroelectric and geothermal energy.

The rally will celebrate the collection of more than 1,100 postcards from Pasadena residents with the message:  “I care about climate change and I want Pasadena to be powered by 100% carbon free energy by 2030.”

Rally goers will be treated to music and to a 5-minute children’s theatre performance of “Switch,” an original play written and directed by Sylvia Holmes.  Additionally, speakers will make 3-minute laser talks on why the transition to 100% carbon free electric power by 2030 is achievable, affordable, and essential for public health and the survival of the next generations.

At 4:30 pm PASADENA 100 supporters will enter the City Council chambers for the presentation of the 1100 plus postcards by local middle and high school students. Each City Councilmember will receive cards completed by their constituents.

Software systems engineer Sam Berndt, who is a member of PASADENA 100 states:  “We are in a climate emergency. Every day we continue to burn fossil fuels we are making our future and our children’s future increasingly unlivable. Now is the time we must act to preserve our way of life. The technologies and economic conditions exist for a rapid and responsible transition to 100% carbon free energy. Pasadena must be bold and join the cities around the world who are transitioning to 100% carbon free energy by 2030.”

The rally was a big success!

Close to 300 people attended, including representatives with banners from our coalition members, and dozens more signs and posters on display from a throng of high school students and teachers. We had live music from pianist David Cutter and acapella singer Jyvonne Haskin, and were treated to a performance of Sylvia Holmes’ new play “Switch” dramatizing our eventual victory over fossil fuel. The student actors–Azai Handy, Elias Handy, Lila Lawrence, Ripley Ryan, Temple Stewart, Yzabella Younger, Emily Zavalawere superb.  Student Yzabella Younger presented 1314 postcards from constituents to Mayor Gordo and Councilmembers Justin Jones, Jess Rivas, Felicia Williams, and Andy Wilson. Incoming Councilmember Jason Lyon and City Manager Miguel Marquez were also present. We also heard from Pasadena Congresswoman Judy Chu, California Assemblymember Chris Holden, and California Senator Anthony Portantino, all of whom supported our goal of 100% by 2030.  We heard a dynamic address by Polytechnic student Audrey Maa reading of the Physicians for PASADENA letter byDr. Marc Futernick, and a laser talk by Sam Berndt.  The rally closed with a rousing call to action from Rev. Tera Landers.

Thanks to all of you who attended and helped.   It was truly a collaborative effort.

Let’s keep the momentum!

Letter appeal to City Hall

As a follow up to the rally, we sent a letter to Mayor Gordo and City Councilmembers asking them to agendize a climate emergency declaration and also to direct PWP to work toward a goal of 100% carbon free energy by 2030.  See letter attached.
